  • It’s Not All Downhill From Here

    Hello Honeybees,

You know how you can hear a song and it triggers certain memories? That song can take you back to a certain place, a special moment or time spent with special people. I have books that trigger certain memories too, some books I’ll reread not just because of the memories but because of the lasting effects that they have on my life. Every year I read Purpose Driven Life, and since discovering The Alchemist I had added it to the list.

I remember my first Zane read, my first Brenda Jackson read, my first J. California Cooper read, my first Toni Morrison read and my first Terry McMillan read. I remember what was happening in life at the time that I immersed myself in these books. The time that I sat aside to actually slow down and sit down with a book in hand and lose myself in the pages.

Well, Terry McMillan’s It’s Not All Downhill From Here is the book for the current stage of my life. It’s about love, marriage, divorce, friendship, money, growing older, parenting, aging parents, loss and more. It’s the Waiting To Exhale for the 50 plus group. Chronicling the friendship of 5 women as they navigate this thing called life. You will find yourself in one or more of these characters. I think that I’m a combination of the main character Loretha and her girl Ko. Each lady has her own life circumstances and issues to deal with but they do it together. They each have their own flaws but hey who is perfect? We see how you can do your best as a parent but once your children are adults, especially adults, you have to let them fall.

We see the value in friendships, good friendships. The value in taking care of your body, at some point you won’t be able to drop it like Thee Stallion. If you do drop it you might need someone to help you up. We see the value in making good financial decisions that will enable you to leave a legacy for your loved ones. We learn that you are never too old and it is never too late for love. You are never too old for second chances and life is not all downhill no matter how many trips around the sun.

I give this book 5 out of 5 honeypots. So grab a copy and a cocktail and read it with your girls. You will not regret it.

For a while now I have been trying to think of a way to launch a series aimed at how life and your body changes as you get older. This book is the launch pad for that series. Still working on a name but it’s coming. Each month I will tackle a different topic. The first one next month (my birthday month) will be about menopause. Leave me a comment below with your menopause questions. Don’t worry I won’t be answering them based on my knowledge. I have some help from some experts.

  • My Tribe

    Hello Honeybees,

    Do you have a tribe?

If so who is in your tribe?

What’s the vibe of your tribe?

Well I have a tribe, I actually have several, here and here . Kind of like the 5 tribes that make up Wakanda. I have several tribes that help keep this queen together. Last month I got together with one of my tribes to celebrate one of our own who recently earned her MBA. It’s important that we celebrate our wins, the big ones and especially the small ones. We try to get together often but between, family, work & LIFE it can be hard. We finally found a day & time that worked for all or rather we all made the time to celebrate. You make time for what’s important to you and this girl time was important.

We decided on pot luck to help make it easier on the host, Me! We had a great time just catching up. We reminisced about the college days, old dating woes, the children, men and of course the future. We FaceTimed one of our daughters who is at Clark Atlanta. It’s just amazing to think that we all met when we were teens & now we have children from college graduates to middle school. Time waits for no wo(man), so you have to enjoy life in the moments.

One thing that made this night extra special was our treasure boxes. We wrote notes to each other to keep in our boxes so that whenever we need a little encouragement we can go to our boxes. This way we always have someone to help adjust our crowns even if we can’t be there physically.

I am so proud to have so many queens surrounding me. I am blessed that we help & encourage one another. Find your tribe and love them hard.

  • Thrifting With A Diva

    Hello Honeybees,

The day after Christmas most people hit the stores for the after Christmas sales. It’s the best time to stock up for all things Christmas for next year. This year I decided to go thrifting instead. I had it all planned out but when I woke up on December 26th the temperature was 31 degrees. That made me change my mind or so I thought… I posted my dilemma on Facebook and my favorite thrifting diva @divinedivastyle heard the call and got me out of the house.

We met at Mid-South Outlet.  Goodwill is usually my go to thrift store but Mid-South Outlet is closer.

All yellow tag items were 50% off so we were on the hunt for those first. Of course the first 3 items that I picked up did NOT have yellow tags but that didn’t stop me.

When shopping at Mid-South Outlet be aware that they do NOT have dressing rooms & once you buy it it’s yours. For stores like this it’s important to shop in the right clothes.  A fitted tee, leggings and slip on shoes if possible & a small cross body bag to hold your phone, money & keys, that way you can try things on over your clothes. You won’t get a true fit but you will have a pretty good idea if it’s something that you can work with.  The aisles are also tight they have these baskets to help.

There were some treasures that we left behind because they either didn’t fit or they were out of budget. YES, we had a budget.

Yes this is a real Lilly Pulitzer size 4.

My limit for today’s trip was $20 and I stayed UNDER budget. I purchased 5 items. 1 skirt, 2 tops and 2 pants. My total…..$17.38.

I’ll share my haul in future post.

Thanks @divinedivastyle for being my thrift shopping buddy.
